New Team Sky To Make UCI ProTour Debut Down Under
7th December 2009
Britain's new professional road cycling team, Team Sky, will make their worldwide debut at the 2010 Santos Tour Down Under in Adelaide.
Santos Tour Down Under Race Director, Mike Turtur, expects the team to do well in its inaugural race.
"Team Sky's vision is bold and unashamedly brash with their aim to 'create the first British winner of the Tour de France within five years'," says Mike Turtur.
"As their maiden race, I'd expect them to arrive in Adelaide with high expectations and plans to impress."
Team Sky's line-up for their first race at the Santos Tour Down Under is highly experienced with a strong British and Australian presence.
"Australian Chris Sutton will be aiming to race well on home soil. He had a good season this year, finishing second overall in both the Jayco Herald Sun Tour and Tour of Britain," says Mike Turtur.
"Russell Downing also had a good year, taking overall victory at the Tour of Ireland. As one of three Brits racing in Adelaide for this new British team, I'd expect him to be aiming high.
"It will be good to see Mathew Hayman back racing at our event. He's a crowd favourite and one of the real good guys of Australian cycling."
Team Sky's roster for the 2010 Santos Tour Down Under will be led by Team Manager, Scott Sunderland (AUS) and includes riders:
Christopher Sutton (AUS)
Christopher Froome (GBR)
Russell Downing (GBR)
Benjamin Swift (GBR)
Davide Vigaṇ (ITA)
Mathew Hayman (AUS)
Gregory Henderson (NZL)
"I am looking forward to seeing Christopher Froome in action. He is a good young rider with a lot of potential, finishing 36th overall in this year's Giro d'Italia and seventh among the young riders," says Mike Turtur.
More rider and team announcements will be issued over the coming weeks.
The 2010 Santos Tour Down Under will be held in Adelaide and regional South Australia from 17-24 January 2010. For more information, visit www.tourdownunder.com.au.
