Cycling Holidays at Santos Tour Down Under

Cycling enthusiasts can combine watching the action of the Santos Tour Down Under with a cycling holiday that lets them test their own cycling skills on the roads of South Australia.

A group of Official Bike Tour Operators are targeting holiday makers from across Australia, New Zealand, Europe and the USA and offering a range of holiday packages to suit keen amateur cyclists through to avid spectators.

Five Official Bike Tour Operators have been appointed for the Santos Tour Down Under, which will be held in Adelaide and regional South Australian from 17-23 January 2011.

"The Official Bike Tour Operators have created a great range cycling holidays for visitors travelling to South Australia for the Santos Tour Down Under," says Race Director Mike Turtur.

"The packaged tours offer choices for all cyclists, from the novice to the most experienced, who want to combine a cycling holiday with watching the biggest bike race in the Southern Hemisphere."

"Visitors can watch all the race action as it unfolds, while experiencing the very best of South Australia’s food, wine and hospitality."

The five Official Bike Tour Operators for the 2011 Santos Tour Down Under are Adventure Collective, Barossa Classic Cycle Tours, Bikestyle Tours, Ciclismo Cycling Tours and Trek Travel.

The Santos Tour Down Under is the biggest cycling race in the Southern Hemisphere, the first race outside Europe to join the prestigious UCI ProTour, and is now the first race on the UCI world road cycling calendar.

"The 2010 Santos Tour Down Under drew record crowds of more than three quarters of a
million people to South Australia, including nearly 40,000 visitors from interstate and overseas," says Mike Turtur.

"The week-long race is a great celebration of cycling and attracts the world’s top teams and cyclists such as Lance Armstrong, Cadel Evans, Luis Leon Sanchez and Robbie McEwen."

The 2011 Santos Tour Down Under will be held in Adelaide and regional South Australia from 16-23 January 2011.

Cruise Ship Athena's Return to SA Worth $3 Million

International Cruises has announced that its flagship, the MV Athena, will again use Adelaide as its home port during the 2011-12 cruise season.

Tourism Minister John Rau has welcomed the 600-passenger cruise ship’s return to South Australian waters, with a 2011-12 itinerary that is expected to boost the State’s economy by $3 million.

Queen Mary 2 Returns for New Cruise Season

2009 Tour Down Under Named Best Tourism Event

The 2009 Tour Down Under was named the Best Tourism Event at the inaugural Australian Event Awards at a ceremony last night in Sydney.

Tourism Minister Jane Lomax-Smith says the award gives well-deserved recognition to the event, which has become the biggest cycling race in the Southern Hemisphere and a major tourism attraction.

Cancer Council SA will again have naming rights for the prelude event to the Santos Tour Down Under next year. The event will be known as the Cancer Council Helpline Classic.

The event – to be held in Adelaide’s Rymill Park on Sunday 17 January 2010 – will raise awareness of cancer and promote the Cancer Council Helpline (13 11 20).
